On today's asking prices this bag lists for more preloved than it costs new, so the true cost is below zero. An asking price is not a sale.
True cost is the price minus what one in excellent condition is listed for today. We do not age that figure, so it flatters very long ownership.

About this bag
Jane Birkin gave the bag its name; Hermès introduced it in 1984. The design is a top-handle bag with a flap held by two straps, the sangles, and a turn-lock, plus a clochette holding a padlock and keys. Sizes are numbered in centimetres, with 25, 30 and 35 the standard labels, and the leathers range from Togo, Epsom and Clemence to exotic skins. Each bag is stitched by hand. The Birkin is not offered on hermes.com and boutique availability is limited, so the New section shows the boutique price we have recorded, with its source and date, rather than an offer you can click. In the preloved market, size, leather, colour, hardware finish, condition and a complete set all shape the asking price.
Questions
Where can I buy a Hermès Birkin new?
Only in Hermès boutiques, and availability there is limited. The Birkin is not sold on hermes.com or by any retailer. The New section shows the boutique price we have recorded for your market, with source and date, so you can compare it with preloved asking prices.
What should I check when buying a Birkin preloved?
Listings here are graded New with tags, Excellent, Very good, Good or Fair. Check the corners and the base, the handles, scratches on the hardware and whether the bag still holds its shape. A complete set includes padlock, keys, clochette, dust bag and box, ideally with the receipt. The Preloved section lists the cheapest offer per grade.
What drives the resale value of a Birkin?
Limited boutique availability is the main reason preloved prices sit where they do. Within the market, size, leather, colour and hardware finish separate one Birkin from another, and condition and completeness come next. Exotic skins form their own market. The retention score on this page shows what current EU listings imply.
How is the true cost of a Birkin calculated here?
We take the best new price in your market and subtract the expected resale value of an Excellent-condition Birkin, based on the median asking price of Excellent-or-better EU listings over the last 90 days relative to the German boutique price. Results appear as a three-year total and per year. These are asking prices; we make no forecast.
